Sitka allows the visitor
to enjoy a variety of wildlife and historical sites to view and tour
when visiting the sea side community of Sitka. People will debate
if Sitka is the most beautiful of the many Alaska cities, you can be the
judge when you come and visit this town. The town is located on
the West side of Baranof Island and to the East is located the
mountains. Several historic and natural landmarks dot the area
from when the Russians owned Alaska. These include the Old Sitka
State site and the Baranof Castle Hill site. If you are looking
for wildlife, the area around Sitka offers a variety of marine and large
animal sightings.
Sitka is a town that is located within the Sitka borough in Southeastern
Alaska. The town is located on the Pacific Ocean and was founded
or incorporated in 1920.
The town of Sitka has an economy based on
lumber, processing, variety of fishing, and tourism. The town
calls home to a Coast Guard air
station, Sheldon Jackson College and the Sitka branch of the University
of Alaska.
When the Russians owned the land, a Russian fort was established here in 1799 by the trader and
first Russian governor of Alaska Aleksandr Baranov. The fort was
destroyed in 1802 and Sitka was the capital of the Alaskan Territory
from 1884 to 1900.
