Ketchikan Alaska

Ketchikan could be described as a dream come true for every person that loves nature and believes in helping the land stay in a natural state.  The city of Ketchikan is famous for the local fishing for Salmon and the native crafts and artwork.  The area hosts many Bald eagles and they can be seen during tours and travel in and around the city.  The town comes close to hibernating in the winter and during the summer booms with the tourism created by Alaska cruises and the tours from the tourists.  You can also find the Misty Fjords National Monument located east of the town.

Ketchikan is located in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, southeastern Alaska, on Revillagigedo Island.  The area is surrounded by nature and beauty.

The city of Ketchikan has a beautiful and natural harbor and is known for the Salmon fishing, mining, lumber and other processing located in the area.  The boom to the city has occurred from the Alaska cruises and the tourism created from the cruise ships coming to this peaceful little city.  The city has a branch of the University of Alaska located here.

The first known industry to be located in the area was in the 1880s and it was a salmon salting center.  The salmon were in great supply and the need to process the fish was started.  After this a full process Salmon cannery was built in the late 1880s.  The town exploded when cooper mining began in the late 1890s.  The majority of the mining in the area has dried up, but the other natural resources are still abundant.

The town now centers most of its major economic activity around tourism.  The tourist come each summer and the tours of the area are still very popular as well as the local arts and crafts.
