Juneau Alaska
Juneau can provide a variety of wildlife and scenery that you will not
find in most other cities in Alaska. You can see glaciers, fly to
the top of the Juneau Ice Field or find many other diverse tours and
options in and around the city of Juneau.
It is not unusual to find whales in the Northern Inside Passage during the
summer time. Since Juneau is located in the center of a forest
area, it is not hard to find black and brown bears when visiting this
area. The majestic Bald Eagle is also found in and around Juneau.
So anyway you look at it, Juneau is a place to visit on any of the
Alaska Cruises and tours being offered by the major lines.
The state of Alaska entered the Union of the US in 1959 and Juneau was
established as the state
capital. The voters of Alaska voted to move the capital in
the early 1970s but as of today the move has not occurred and the fever
to move the capital is simmering. The local boundary of the city
were also expanded in the 1970s and the city now is considered one of
the largest community areas in the whole of the US.
Juneau can be found located in the Juneau Borough, in southeastern
Alaska, in the Panhandle region or inside passage area. It is the capital of the state and a port on
Gastineau Channel opposite Douglas Island and was founded or incorporated
in 1900. Located at
the foot of Mount Roberts and Mount Juneau, Juneau is the
economic and materials center for the Panhandle region of Alaska.
Some of the local economic industries found in Juneau include state government activities,
mining, lumber, fishing and fish processing and now a major boom has
been Alaska cruises and the local tours for all the tourist. To get to
and from Juneau you will find that boat or airplane is the easiest. Juneau is the site of the University of
Alaska, Southeast and the Alaska State Museum and the Last Chance
Mining Museum. The stately Mendenhall Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park and
Preserve are located in the area and are worth a visit.
The city was established in 1880 by two miners, Joseph Juneau and Richard Harris
who were lucky enough to find gold in the area. This was the
beginning that led to the founding of the town as a gold-mining town.
The gold mining ended in the 1940s, and the early 1990s saw a new and
rekindled
interest in this activity. The city of Juneau was crowned as the
official capital of the Alaska territory in 1900.
